Domestic Gas
![]() Combi Combi boilers heat hot water as it is required, therefore there is no need to have a hot water cylinder in an attic for example. They are ideal for properties where there is a low demand for hot water. |
![]() Heat Only Heat only, or "conventional" boilers are suited to properties where there is a higher demand for water than a combi can deal with. The central heating circuit is open to the atmosphere to allow for changes in pressure. |
![]() System Sealed system boilers are more suited for applications where the demand for hot water is higher than households where a combi boiler would be enough. System boilers require a cylinder to act as a hot store. |
Boiler Scrappage Scheme
In December 2009 the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, announced plans for a Boiler Scrappage Scheme, allocating cash to allow those with the most inefficient of boilers to get financial support when upgrading to a more modern unit.
Initial news suggests that from April 2010 the Boiler Scrappage Scheme would give some 125,000 households the right to claim up to £400 towards the purchase and installation of a new, high-efficiency boiler. In a typical 3 bedroom house the estimated fuel saving could be as high as £250 per year.
Currently the Boiler Scrappage Scheme is only for "G-rated" (on the SEDBUK scale) boilers, and is only available for homes in England and Wales, although there is call for this scheme to be made available in Scotland too.
