Indirect unvented cylinders keep hot water heated by circulating hot water through a long coil inside the cylinder. Normally this hot water will be supplied by the household boiler.

Direct unvented cylinders provide hot water to the taps that has been heated by one or two electric immersion heaters. Direct cylinders are especially useful when there is not mains gas or oil to heat the water.
